Magic Visions: An Online Exhibition by
The Centre for Visual Art, University of KwaZulu-Natal
I searched through the entire magic lantern slide collection. Many slides caught my eye. I was drawn towards slides that felt passively aggressive. These slides where used as advertisements and felt like propaganda posters. Scenes were depicted as the norm, but upon a deeper inspection, contain a harsh and devastating history. The landscape slide I chose to work with was captioned with the words, “Zululand, Typical Scene”. I was inspired to recreate the landscape scene in a different atmosphere. I didn’t want a beautiful landscape to be depicted as a “typical scene”, ready for colonization. I wished to recontextualize the slide, not as an advertisement, but as an archive of a gorgeous landscape.
